Wheat Weaving: Love Knot

The “Love Knot” weaving gets its name from the tradition of being used as a courting favor. A young man hoping to impress a lady would pluck a few straws and weave them into a pleasing design and offer to the lady. If she wore the weaving, then she had accepted his invitation and the two were courting.

A love knot is a good design to start with as a first weaving due to the fact that they only use three straws and take fairly little time. And an additional benefit is that the weaving is easy enough that the straws don’t have to be held down, the design can be woven as you hold it in your hands. The weaving itself for this particular love knot is the same braid that is used to braid hair. Each outside piece is bend under the middle one, becoming the new middle piece. It’s a bit awkward at first, but once you get the rhythm down, you’ll find it flows easily.

I usually leave love knots plain, but there’s always the option to spruce them up by tying a bow just above the wheat heads.
